Uninsured Motorist Insurance – How Much Do You Need?

Uninsured Motorist Insurance - How Much Do You Need?

When thinking about uninsured motorist coverage, it is very important that you think about how much may be needed to cover an accident adequately. Since an insurance company will only pay up to the limits in the policy, you want to be sure that it is high enough.

According to the Insurance Research Council (IRC), there is a slow rise taking place in the number of drivers who are uninsured. This is only expected to increase in the years to come, and already could be as high as 16 percent in your state, or higher.

Every state has minimums that are required, but uninsured motorist coverage is not required in every state. There is a requirement, however, that if you buy uninsured motorist insurance in a state where it is not required, that you must buy bodily injury liability.

At the Edmunds.com Website, Philip Reed has prepared a chart showing whether or not your state requires uninsured motorist coverage and what the minimums are. You should talk to your insurance agent about the amounts that they recommend in order to be adequately covered.
